Abstract

Liquids and gases, separating.-In an apparatus for separating gases from liquids, particularly for use in boiler installations, economizers &c., of the type in which heated liquid is discharged into a chamber maintained at a pressure such that a portion of the liquid evaporates, the vapour being subsequently condensed, the necessity for piping between the separate units is obviated by placing the condenser inside the evaporating chamber. The condenser is preferably open to the vapour space of the chamber throughout a substantial portion of its length to prevent localized flow therethrough, and a valve is provided whereby the liquid is discharged into the chamber at substantially uniform velocity. Liquid is supplied to an inlet 5 of a chamber 6 provided in a removable head 4 of a cylindrical container 2 and flows thence through the tubes of a primary condenser 7 to a header 8 on the movable head 3. It then flows through the tubes of a secondary condenser 9 to a second chamber on the head 4 from which the liquid leaves the apparatus to be heated to the required temperature. It re-enters the apparatus by a valve 12, operated by a float 13, actuated by the liquid level in the container 2, and passes to a secondary spray valve 15, which by means of a stem 17, spring 21, and adjustable follower head 20 is adapted to open under a predetermined static head and to deliver the liquid at substantially constant velocity to the spray pans 23. The chamber 24 is maintained, by means of a steam ejector 27 fitted to the primary condenser 7, at a pressure such that the liquid will boil. The vapour formed and released gases pass to the condenser 7 by an opening 25 extending the whole length thereof. The flow area of the condenser decreases towards the outlet 26, so that the flow of gases is uniform. The condensed vapours, together with the steam from the ejector 27, then pass to the space surrounding the tubes of the secondary condenser 9. The degasified liquid is withdrawn from the chamber 24 by an outlet 29. In a modification, Fig. 6, designed to operate at atmospheric pressure, the ejector and secondary condenser are eliminated and the degasified liquid is passed through the spaces between the tubes of a heat exchanger 31 prior to being withdrawn. The raw liquid is first heated in the tubes of this heat exchanger before passing to the primary condenser 7, and before being sprayed is heated to more than 212‹ F.
