Description

SPECIFICATION Mounting of panels or the like The present invention relates to the mounting of panels or the like, and has particular reference to a mounting means for a wall cladding sheet.
The invention has as its primary object the provision of a mounting means of the kind described which may enable a wall cladding sheet, for example a sheet of fireproof material, to be mounted in a convenient manner at a spacing from a wall, thus allowing circulation of air between the wall and sheet.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided mounting means for a wall cladding sheet, comprising an elongate wall-engaging member and a channel section element for receiving an edge portion of a wall cladding sheet, the element being so mounted on the member by spacer means as to, in use, support such sheet edge portion in spaced relation to a wall engaged by the member.
The member preferably comprises a strip adapted to, in use, rest flat against the surface of such wall, such strip preferably including means enabling the member to be fastened to the wall.
In one embodiment, the member comprises a further strip which is adapted to, in use, bear on a floor or ceiling surface, desirably at a point spaced from said wall surface. The strips preferably define an angle therebetween greater than 90 , so that with the first-mentioned strip aligned with and bearing against a wall surface, the other strip will extend away from the wall in a direction generally towards the adjacent floor or ceiling surface. This latter strip will thus serve to provide a neat, flush fit of the mounting means to the floor or ceiling surface.
In another embodiment, particularly for use at the upper edge of a wall cladding sheet, the further strip of the member instead comprises a first portion connected to the firstmentioned strip and extending away from the plane thereof and a second portion extending from the first portion back to said plane.
The mounting means may enable a wall cladding sheet to be mounted in spaced relationship to a wall so as to permit air circulation around the sheet, the sheet preferably being mounted by two such mounting means arranged at the upper and lower edges of the sheet and bearing against the wall surface and preferably also the adjacent floor and ceiling surfaces or equivalent surfaces (the references in this specification to wall, floor and ceiling surfaces are to be understood as equally denoting equivalent surfaces).
In accordance with a further aspect of the invention, therefore, there is provided a wall cladding assembly comprising a wall cladding sheet mounted in spaced relation to a wall by means of two such mounting means, the upper and lower edge portions of the sheet each being received in the channel section element of a respective one of the mounting means.
The two mounting means can be held in place by attachment of the wall engaging members to the wall surface and the sheet can be a relatively loose fit in the channel section elements of the mounting means so that any expansion of the sheet when heated will be accommodated.
Expediently, the sheet is attached to the wall by attaching means at a location spaced from the two mounting means. The attaching means may comprise a first element, for example a substantially U-shaped bracket, secured to the wall and a second element, for example a spring clip, secured to the sheet, the second element being detachably connectible to the first element and movable relative thereto.
In addition, the sheet may be provided at at least one vertical edge thereof with a joining element enabling the sheet to be joined to another sheet extending at right angles thereto. The or each joining element preferably defines two channels, one of which receives a vertical edge portion of the first-mentioned sheet and the other of which serves for reception of a vertical edge portion of said other sheet.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view from above of part of a mounting means according to one embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view, to a reduced scale, of the mounting means of Fig. 1 showing a wall cladding sheet mounted therein; Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view from below of part of a mounting means according to another embodiment of the invention; and Figure 4 is a perspective view from above of a joining device for joining the sheet of Fig.
2 to an adjacent sheet.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a mounting means 10 for mounting a wall cladding sheet, in particular a sheet 11 of non-combustible fireproofing material, parallel to but at a spacing from a wall 1 2 in a domestic or other building. To effect such mounting, two such mounting means 1 0 are preferably provided at the upper and lower edges of the sheet, as will be subsequently explained.
The mounting means 10 comprises a chan nel section element 1 3 connected by a plurality of spaced apart brackets 14 to a vertical arm 1 5 of an elongated member 1 6. The member 1 6 further comprises an arm 1 7 which extends from the arm 15 to include therewith an angle greater than 90 , for example 95 to 135 , and which is provided at its free end with an angled portion 1 8 inclined at an even greater angle to the arm 1 5.
The element 13, brackets 14 and member 1 6 consist of metal or other non-combustible material, with the brackets 14 preferably being connected to the arm 1 5 by spot-welding.
As shown in Fig. 2, the channel section element 1 3 receives an edge portion of the fireproofing sheet 11, the edge portion resting on the base of the channel of the element. In Fig. 2, the mounting means 10 is shown in the orientation in which it receives the lower edge portion of the sheet; the element 1 3 of a further mounting means 10, which is inverted in relation to the orientation shown in Figs. 1 and 2 (c.f. Fig. 3), receives the upper edge portion of the sheet.
With the sheet thus engaged in the channels of the elements 1 3 of upper and lower mounting means 10, it may be mounted in spaced relationshiop to the wall 1 2 by bringing the vertical arms 1 5 of the two mounting means into contact with the surface of the wall with the free end portions 1 8 of the arms 1 7 of the mounting means bearing against the ceiling and floor surfaces adjacent to the wall. To retain the two mounting means 10 and sheet 11 in position, the arm 1 5 of each mounting means is secured to the wall 12, for example by means of screws passing through apertures (not shown) in the arms 15.
The sheet 11 may be a loose fit in the element 1 3 of the upper mounting means, for example there may be gap between the top edge of the sheet and the base of the channel of the element, so as to permit expansion of the sheet in a vertical direction when the sheet is heated. The sheet may also be free to expand parallel to the elements, i.e., in a horizontal direction.
To provide an additional location of the sheet 11 relative to the wall 1 2 at a point intermediate the upper and lower edges of the sheet, the sheet may be attached to the wall by an attaching means 1 9. The attaching means 1 9 comprises a U-shaped bracket 20 fixed to the wall and a spring clip 21 fastened to the sheet by means of a bolt or screw, the clip 21 being detachably clipped ta one of the upstanding arms of the bracket 20. Any expansion of the sheet in a vertical direction is accommodated by the clip sliding relative to the associated arm of the bracket.
In addition, each vertical edge portion of the sheet 11 may be covered by a trim strip 22 which consists of a flat element 23 having three flanges 24 projecting perpendicularly thereform, one of the flanges bring engageable with the wall 1 2 and the other two flanges defining a channel receiving the adjacent vertical edge portion of the sheet 11.
The fireproofing sheet 1 thus mounted is disposed at a spacing from the wall so that air can circulate between the sheet and wall, and the arms 17 enable a neat fitting of the sheet to the floor and ceiling surfaces. As well as the mounting means 10, the attaching means 1 9 and trim strips 22 can be made of metal or other non-combustible material, to enhance the fire resistance of the cladding.
The mounting means 10 can of course be used to mount other kinds of panels and sheets, for example decorative panels, in suitable locations. Any panel or sheet thus located is easily demountable if required.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings there is shown a mounting means 10a for use in mounting the upper edge of a wall cladding sheet, for example the sheet 11, to a wall at a spacing below a ceiling. Features of the mounting means 1 Oa are identified by the same numerals as the corresponding features of the mounting means 10, but with the suffix 'a'.
In this case, however, instead of an angled arm 1 7 the elongated member 1 6a comprises an arm 1 7a which has a first portion extending perpendicularly to the arm 1 5a and a second portion 1 8a extending back at an angle towards the plane of the arm 1 5a. In use of the mounting means 1 0a, the free end of the portion 1 8a engages the surface of a wall to which the arm 1 5a is attached.
Finally, in Fig. 4 there is shown a joining element 30 whereby a vertical edge of a wall cladding sheet, such as the sheet 11, which is mounted by one or more of the mounting means 10, 1 0a, may be joined to an adjacent vertical edge of another such sheet. The element 30 essentially comprises a profile section defining two channels 31 and 32 each for reception of a vertical edge portion of a respective one of two wall cladding sheets extending at a right angle to each other, and having a flange 33 for mounting the element to a wall with the channels 31 and 32 at a spacing thereform. The element 30 thus provides a neat fitting together of the two sheets.
It will be readily apparent the mounting means, attaching means, trim strip and joining element hereinbefore described may be modified without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended
