Description

SPECIFICATION Starter for an internal combustion engine The invention relates to a starter for an internal combustion engine.
Starters for an internal combustion engine are known comprising a starter motor on the drive shaft of which is screwably arranged a driver sleeve of a screw shift drive, which driver sleeve is coupled to a starter pinion by means of an overrunning clutch, the starter also having a pivotally mounted bifurcated engaging lever which is actuable by means of a solenoid-type switch and by means of which the screw shift drive can be resiliently and yieldingly displaced on the drive shaft, the fork ends of the engaging lever movably acting upon a driver disc which is loosely mounted on the driver sleeve.
In starters of this kind both the engaging lever and the driver disc have been made from sheet metal. The engaging lever comprises two halves which are interconnected by spot welding. The fork ends of the engaging lever are rotatably secured by rivets to rectangular tabs formed on the driver disc. The central hole in the driver disc is in the form of a slotted hole in order to enable the driver disc to perform a pivoting movement relative to the cylindrical members carrying the driver disc. This arrangement of engaging lever and driver disc has the disadvantage that it is an expensive matter to manufacture the parts by punching and welding and to interconnect them by rivets. Furthermore, the sheet metal parts no longer satisfy the increasing requirements with respect to resistance to vibration and silent operation.
There is provided by the present invention a starter for an internal combustion engine, having a starter motor on the drive shaft of which is screwably arranged a driver sleeve of a screw shift drive, which driver sleeve is coupled to a starter pinion by means of an overrunning clutch, the starter also having a pivotally mounted bifurcated engaging lever which is actuable by means of a solenoid-type switch and by means of which the screw shift drive can be resiliently and yieldingly displaced on the drive shaft, the fork ends of the engaging lever movably acting upon a driver disc which is loosely mounted on the driver sleeve, wherein the engaging lever is constructed in one piece from plastics material and each of its fork ends is provided with a circular hole, which holes are engaged by cylindrical lugs on the driver disc which is also in the form of a plastics part and whose end faces are provided, in the region of the lugs, with guide surfaces which extend parallel to the longitudinal axis and which overlap edge portions of a guide ring and of a stop disc between which the driver disc is movably arranged and which are likewise movably mounted on the driver sleeve.
In contrast to the known starter, the starter in accordance with the invention has the advantage that the one-piece engaging lever manufactured from plastics material satisfies requirements with respect to resistance to vibration, is pivotable and movable silently, and is suitable for automatic manufacture and assembly in the same manner as the plastics driver disc with which it forms a structural unit, which can be readily and automatically preassembled. The guide surfaces formed on the driver disc enable the driver disc to deviate from the longitudinal movement of the meshing drive during the pivoting movement of the engaging lever.
The inexpensive construction of the central bore in the driver disc in the form of a cylindrical hole is particularly advantageous.
Further advantages are that the resilient construction of the fork ends of the engaging lever facilitates automatic assembly and ensure a reliable, although releasable, connection between the engaging lever and the driver disc, and that the sloping portions of the fork ends facilitate mounting of the driver disc on the engaging lever.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the starter of the embodiment, Figure 2 is a fragmentary section taken on the line ll-ll of Fig. 1, and Figure 3 is a fragmentary section taken on the line Ill-Ill of Fig. 1.
The starter has a motor 1 having a housing 2 and a drive shaft 3. A screw shift drive is movably disposed on the drive shaft 3. The screw shift drive comprises a starting pinion 4 which is coupled to a driver sleeve 6 by way of a roller-type overrunning clutch 5. The driver sleeve 6 is mounted on a coarse screwthreaded portion 7 of the drive shaft 3. A guide ring 8 of approximately Z-shaped cross section, and a stop disc 9, are movably mounted on the driver sleeve 6. The stop disc 9 abuts against a spring ring 10 which is mounted on the drive sleeve 6 in the vicinity of the adjacent end thereof. A driver disc 11 is movably disposed between the guide ring 8 and the stop disc 9.A meshing spring 1 2 is also mounted on the driver sleeve 6 and, when in the normal position shown in Fig. 1, urges the guide ring 8 against the stop disc 9 without impairing the movability of the driver disc 11. For this purpose, the guide ring t is provided with a guide portion 1 3 which is movably arranged on the driver sleeve 6, which is somewhat longer than the axial thick ness-ithe driver disc 11 and which is urged against the stop disc 9 by means of the engaging spring 1 2.
The driver disc 11 is made from a plastics material (a thermosetting plastics material in the present instance) which satisfies the ther mal requirements. The driver disc 11 has a cylindrical central hole 14 whose diameter is larger, by an amount which will be described further below, than the external diameter of the guide portion 13 3 which extends through the central hole 14. Two cylindrical lugs 1 5 are formed on the sides of the driver disc 11.
The diameters of the lugs 1 5 are larger than the axial thickness of the driver disc 11. The lugs 1 5 thus form, at the edge of the driver disc 11, guide surfaces 1 8 and 1 9 which extend beyond the end faces 16 and 1 7 of the driver disc and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the central hole 14. The guide surfaces 1 8 thereby overlap a rim 20 of the guide ring 8 which is likewise formed parallel to the guide portion 1 3. The guide surfaces 1 9 extend beyond the rim of the stop disc 9.
A solenoid-operated relay 21 is mounted laterally on the housing 2 of the motor 1. A drive bearing 22 is secured to the end face of the housing 2 and of the solenoid-operated switch 21 by means of draw rods 23. A sealing member 24 is interposed between the housing 2, the solenoid-operated relay 21, and the drive bearing 22. The sealing member 24 is guided in lateral recesses 25 in the drive bearing 22 and abuts against a plastics support member 26 which is likewise arranged between recesses 25. The support member 26 has two parallel limbs 27 providing two aligned bores 28. An engaging lever 29 is guided between limbs 27 and is pivotally mounted on a pin 30 fitted in the bores 28.
The engaging lever 29 is in the form of a bifurcated one-piece member injectionmoulded from plastics material. Its end 31 extends into a slot 32 in a connection end 33 of an armature 34 of the solenoid-type relay 21. The fork ends 35 of the engaging 29 are rendered resilient relative to one another by means of a slot 36. A circular hole 37 is incorporated in the vicinity of the end of each fork end. The fork ends 35 engage laterally around the driver disc 11. The cylindrical lugs 1 5 of the driver disc are rotatably mounted in the holes 37 in the fork ends 35. A sloping portion 38 is formed on each fork end 35 to act as a further assembly aid in addition to the slot 36. The width of the sloping portions is equal to the diameter of the holes 37. Each sloping portion 38 commences at the inside 39 of the fork ends 35 approximately on a level with the centre of the holes 37 and taper off at the edges of the fork ends 35 in the vicinity of the outsides 40 thereof.
When the engaging lever 29 is pivoted, the driver disc 11 is also moved at right angles to the meshing movement of the driver sleeve 6 and of the guide ring 8. The central hole 14 in the driver disc 11 is sufficiently large to permit the required deflection of the driver disc 11 at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the guide ring 8. The guide surfaces 1 8 on the driver disc 11 prevent radial movements of the driver disc 11 relative to the guide ring 8 other than in the direction, at right angles to the lugs 1 5 of the driver disc 11, effected by the pivoting movement of the engaging lever 29.
