Abstract

A closure for a container 1 has a stopper 2 which fits inside the mouth of the container 1 and a transparent capping member 4 which fits over the stopper 2 and is secured to the mouth of the container 1. The stopper has a first portion 2b which fits inside the container 1 and a second portion 2a, the rim 3 of which engages the inside of the capping member 4. The intermediate shoulder portion between the first and second portions 2b and 2a respectively, rests on the mouth of the container 1. Thus a compartment is formed between the stopper 2 and the capping member 4 which may be used to hold an article 10, for example, a free gift for an advertising campaign. <IMAGE>

Description

SPEi:IFICATION A t:ap for a container The present invention relates to a cap for a container, and to a container fitted with the cap.
According to the present invention there is provided a cap for a container comprising a stopper adapted to fit inside a mouth of the container, and a transparent capping member which fits over the stopper and the mouth of the container, the stopper and capping member being shaped so that in the assembled state a compartment is formed between them.
The cap may therefore ce used to contain a gift or sales promotion object in the compartment, the gift being visible through the capping member. Such a cap may be used for marketing a product in conjunc ,ion with an advertising campaign and is advantageous over marketing with a free gift hidden in a container.
Thus the cap has a hollow pot-shaped stopper which can be fitted inside the mouth of a container and which projects from the mouth, this stopper being provided with means to which the capping member is fitted, the capping member fitting externally over the mouth of the container. Thus, the compartment is formed between the stopper and the ffl-aJ a ping member.
The stopper is preferably radially symmetric to fit in a circular mouthed container, and has a stepped configuration with a first portion with a first radius and a second portion with d second radius larger than the first radius. The first and second portions are joined by an intermediate portion. The first portion fits within the mouth of the container and the intermediate portion rests on the mouth of the container, thus supporting the stopper. The second portion has a rim projecting from its edge furthest from the intermediate portion and the rim engages a groove formed on the inside of the capping member.
The capping member also has a shirt which fits over the mouth of the container. The shirt of the capping member may be provided with a groove which engages a rim on the mouth of the container to secure the capping member, and thus the stopper on the container.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure 1 shows a section through a cap according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a section through the cap shown in Figure 1 when fitted on a container; and FigureS shows a sectional view of a part of the cap illustrating the attachment of the cap to the container.
Referring first to Figure 1, a cap for a cylindrical container 1 has a stopper 2 stepped to form an upper portion 2a and a lower portion 2b joined by an intermediate portion 2c. The stopper has an outwardly projecting end rim 3.
A capping member 4, has a shirt 5 and a groove formed in the internal contour of the top of the capping member between the top and a rib 7 provided adjacent the junction of the skirt 5 and the top of the capping member 4. The skirt 5 also has a groove 8 of rectangular section, formed at an intermediate position on the inside of the shirt.
The lower portion 2b of the stopper 2 fits into the mouth of the container 1, and the intermediate portion 2c rests on the edge of the mouth of the container, and thus the stopper is engaged with the container.
The cap 4 fits over the stopper 2, and rests on the rim 3 of the upper portion 2a, the rim 3 fitting inside the groove 6, and the rib 7 abuts against the rim 3 so that the cap is retained on the stopper 2.
The skirt 5 of the capping member 4 is placed externally over the mouth of the container 1, which is provided with a rim 9 which fits in the internal groove 8 in the skirt 5, so that the cap is held on the container 1 and the stopper is held in position in the mouth of the container 1 between the mouth and the stopper. Thus the container is closed and a compartment is formed between the stopper 2 and the capping member 4, into which, before the capping member 4 is fitted onto the stopper 2, objects 10 may be disposed, these objects being advertising articles intended to promote the sale of the product in the container. These articles can be seen in the compartment due to the transparent nature of the capping member 4.
1. A cap for a container comprising a stopper adapted to fit inside a mouth of the container, and a transparent capping member which fits over the stopper and the mouth of the container, the stopper and capping member being shaped so that in the assembled state a compartment is formed between them.
2. A cap according to claim 1, wherein the stopper has a first portion with a first radius and a second portion with a second radius larger than said first radius, the first and second portions being joined by an intermediate portion, the first portion fitting within the mouth of the container and the intermediate portion resting on th edge of the mouth.
3. A cap according to claim 2 wherein the second portion of the stopper has a rim which engages a groove in the inner surface of the capping member, thereby to secure the capping member to the stopper.
4. A cap according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the capping member has a rim which engages the container, thereby to secure the capping member to the container.
5. A cap for a container substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
6. A container having a mouth with a cap according to any one of the preceding claims fitted thereto.
