Abstract

203,401. Brownlow, R., Woodhouse, B., and Shepherd, W. B. June 8,1922. Pencil-holders.-In a pencil-holder, the leadpropelling mechanism comprises a rack member 14 freely sliding in a spring-returned tube 13 carrying a pawl 17 which co-operates with the rack to feed the lead forward, the forward end of the rack being frictionally held in the lead-holding tube 15. The pawl 17 is pivoted between lugs on the tube 13 and is normally held ir. position by a spring acting against a collar 21. The end of the tube 15 is pinched in to engage the sides of the rack, which is preferably of square cross-section, to prevent rotation. An extension 23 is formed on the tube 15 to engage the pawl 17 and lift it out of engagement with the teeth when in the forward position in order to allow the rack to be pushed in when it is required to enclose the lead. The forward end of the tube 13 telescopes upon the tube 15 and is acted on by a spring 22 to hold it normally in the retracted position. A pusher 5 is slidably mounted in the head 3 of the pencilholder and its forward end acts on the end of the tube 13 to move it forward together with the pawl, rack and lead when required. A receptacle for spare leads is formed between the tube 13 and the barrel 1, the base of the receptacle being constituted by a neck 12 through which the tube 13 slides.
