Abstract

Extrusion machines.-Tubes, sheets &c. of rubber or other plastic material are formed by extruding the material in the form of strips and uniting said strips along their edges as they emerge from the press to form a complete tube, sheet, &c., the strips being composed of different qualities, kinds or colours. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus for producing tubes with longitudinal stripe and comprising inner and outer nozzles g', g<2> associated with a die h, the nozzles being grooved at g<4> and so disposed that the grooves of one nozzle alternate with those of the other. By arranging the grooves g<4> spirally and providing a rotary mandrel, the strips of rubber &c. may be spirally disposed. The mandrel k, Fig. 6, may be rotated and fed endways through the nozzle by a belt l; or, as shown in Fig. 7, the mandral may be, of a twisted polygonal form and be engaged by a roller or rollers r. Fig. 11 shows an apparatus for sheets comprising a delivery nozzle v furnished with converging passages w<1>, w<2> aligned with a series of openings in a member w<3> which openings merge into a slit formed in a die member x. The plastic material is delivered to the passages w<1>, w<2> by scrolls or rams. According to the Provisional Specification, tubes &c. may be formed by extruding superposed layers of material.
