Abstract

Driving - gear. - In engines of the kind described in Specification 196,782 in which the movement of the piston is transmitted through a lever passing through the cylinder wall, the movement of several pistons is, according to this invention, transmitted to a. single crank. Fig. 1 shows a two stroke cycle engine with two cylinders each having oppositely moving pistons and the outer ends of which serve as pumps. Two lever; 2 mounted on shafts 3 each engage two pistons; arms 4 on the shafts are connected by a link 5 to which the connecting-rod 6 is attached. The engine may comprise a series of such pairs of cylinders. One modification comprises a single horizontal cylinder having two pistons, with the arms 2 and 4 of one lever in line and those of the other at right angles and the connecting rod attached to the arm 4 of the first lever. In a second modification there are two cylinders side by side each with a single piston and with a shaft 3 between them. The levers may be mounted on adjustable fulcra to vary the clearance. A single cylinder engine may have the lever mounted on an adjustable fulcrum to vary both stroke and clearance.
