Abstract

A torque transmission shaft for motor vehicles comprises first and second sheet metal tubes (3, 7) having respective inter-engaging splined portions (5, 8), the tubes (3, 7) being coated externally and internally, respectively, with a low friction coefficient plastics material; the splined end of the second tube (7) being rolled, after coupling, to form a guide and support neck (9) to eliminate radial play. A dust-excluding bush (11) may alternatively be fitted in place of the support neck (9). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Transmission shaft with a splined coupling The present invention relates to a transmission shaft with a splined coupling for use in, for example, motor vehicles.
More particularly, the invention is concerned with a torque transmission shaft of the type comprising two sheet metal tubes coupled by the inter-engagement of respective splined portions adjacent one end of each tube, one tube having an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the other tube.
It is known to manufacture torque transmission shafts from thin sheet metal tubes of different diameters, one end of each tube being formed with splines made by a rolling process. The diameters of the tubes differ sufficiently to allow one tube to be inserted into the other to form a telescopic shaft with a torque coupling between the tubes which permits relative axial sliding between the tubes.
One such example of a splined torque transmission shaft is that made by "Grob"of Mannedorf, Switzerland.
The torsional flexibility imparted to a transmission shaft of this type is dependent upon its practical applications, for example, to a motor vehicle: too high a rigidity adversely affects the operation of various parts of the transmission. In most cases, therefore, it is necessary to use a flexible coupling between the tubes constituting the shaft.
The applicants' Italian Patent Application No.
69622--A/77 describes a coupling of this type for a torque transmission shaft for motor vehicles, comprising a first thin sheet metal tube having splines at one of its ends engaging splines at one end of a second thin sheet metal tube having an internal diameter which is slightly larger than the external diameter of the first tube, and a third thin sheet metal tube having an internal diameter larger than the external diameter of the second tube, and splines at one of its ends engaging at least one elastomeric ring inserted between the second and third tubes.
A coupling of this type, however, has the disadvantage of being rather heavy, due to the presence of three tubes inserted one inside the other, while, at the same time, the relative high number of components increases the production cost.
An object of the present invention is to provide a torque transmission shaft which avoids the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a torque transmission shaft for motor vehicles, of the aforesaid type, characterised in that said one tube is lined by, and said other tube is coated externally by, a coating having a low coefficient of friction.
The invention will now be more particularly described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a first embodimentof a torque transmission shaft according to the invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a detail of the shaft of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a second embodiment of a torque transmission shaft according to the invention, and Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a detail of the shaft of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a torque transmission shaft comprising first and second thin sheet metal tubes 3, 7 respectively, which are torsionally coupled by the interengagement of respective splined portions 5, 8 formed adjacent the respective ends of each tube 3, 7. The splined portion of the second tube 7 has an internal diameter which is substantially equal to the external diameter of the splined portion 6 of the first tube 3. The splined portions 5, 8 are formed by rolling, the internally splined portion 8 of the second tube 7 fitting closely over the externally splined portion 5 of the first tube 3.
As a result of this close fit, the tubes 3, 7 form a shaft with a rigid torque coupling as regards rotational movement, while allowing telescopic relative axial sliding between the tubes 3, 7.
Aster coupling the tubes 3, 7 together, the second tube 7 is rolled at its end adjacent the splined portion 8 to form a guide and support means, which, in the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, comprises a swaged neck 9, the internal diameter of which is substantially equal to the external diameter of the first tube 3, permitting axial sliding by the tubes 3, 7 while substantially eliminating any radial play between the tubes 3, 7 due to differences in the diameter of the tubes.
In the second embodiment, shown in Figures 3 and 4, the end of the second tube 7 adjacent the splined portion 8 has an external circumferential groove 10 adapted to receive a dust-sealing muff 11 which protects the zone of permitted axial sliding against the ingress of dirt, and internal circumferential groove 12 adapted to receive guide and support means comprising a bush 13. The bush 13 is an elastomeric band which, on assembly of the shaft, is wound onto the first tube 3 until it has an external diameter which corresponds to the internal diameter of the internal groove 12. The bush 13 is kept in place by a metal retaining ferrule 1 4.
The elastomeric band which forms the bush 1 3 is provided with a toothed axial profile which ensures the recovery of any play between the tubes 3, 7, and avoids any sticking which may be caused by possible differences in the diameters of the tubes.
A coating of a plastics material with a low coefficient of friction, for example, RILSAN (Trade Mark) is applied to the co-operating external and internal surfaces of the tubes 3, 7 respectively and assists the relative axial sliding of the tubes by reducing the frictional forces.
In known manner, the free end (not shown) of each tube 3, 7 has a universal coupling joint.
