Abstract
202,691. Guy, H. L., and Metropolitan- Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. April 27, 1922. Measuring-apparatus.-The distance between: two objects is measured by rigidly connecting to one object a vessel maintained full of fluid and provided with an orifice through which the fluid escapes, and arranging the other object, or a part connected with it, so as to impede the flow from the orifice. The pressure within the vessel will then depend upon the distance between the orifice and the impeding object and a pressure gauge fitted to the vessel may be graduated in terms of length. Such apparatus is especially adapted for measurements upon relatively moving objects as in determining the axial movement of a turbine shaft, and a form suitable for this purpose comprises a body 4 divided into two chambers 5, 6. by a channel 7, the chamber 5 taking an oil supply pipe 8 and the chamber 6 taking a nozzle 9 and a pressure gauge connection at 10. A plug 11 with a small bore is placed in the channel 7 and the apparatus is fixed to the turbine pedestal so that the nozzle projects through the end cover 16 with the orifice near a surface 17 connected to the turbine shaft. Oil is supplied by the pipe 8 at constant pressure and axial movement of the shaft will be indicated by the pressure gauge, which may also actuate alarms or signals. Water, steam and other fluids may be used, and the apparatus is also adapted for indicating the variation between a surface and its pattern, by moving the nozzle along a path corresponding to the. pattern and allowing the fluid to impinge upon the surface.
