Abstract

Lugs (1A), (2A) are attached in juxtaposed relationship to the articles (1), (2) to be attached to one another and a U-shaped locking member (3) is arranged to straddle the lugs and be jammed between the projections (4A) extending from the lugs and the adjacent faces of the articles. Separate wedges (5) may be driven between the locking member and the projections to perform the jamming action. The projections (4A) are formed by the opposite ends of a pin 4. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements Relating to Fastening Devices This invention relates to a fastening device contrived to secure together two articles in sideby-side relation which may be abutting relation or spaced relation and to a method of securing together two such members.
According to the invention a fastening device for fastening together two articles in side-by-side relation comprises two lugs each attachable to a respective one of the articles to be connexted so that the lugs are juxtaposed when the articles are in position to be fastened together, a projection extending from the side of each lug which is remote from the other lug when the lugs are in juxtaposed position the projections then extending away from one another, and a Ushaped locking member arranged to straddle the juxtaposed lugs with each leg of the locking member wedged in a locking position between a respective articie and the projection extending from the respective lug.
The invention also includes the combination of two articles to be connected and a fastening device as described.
Also according to the present invention a method of securing together two articles in sideby-side relation comprises mounting on said articles two lugs in juxtaposed relationship one on each article, each lug presenting projection extending in a direction away from the other lug and fitting a U-shaped locking member over the lugs from one side of the lugs to straddle the lugs so that each leg of the U-shaped locking member is wedged between the leg of a respective article and the projection presented by the lug mounted on that article.
Each projection may be constituted by a pin extending from the respective lug.
The two projections may be formed by opposite ends of a common pin passing through both lugs.
Each projection may present a cylindrical surface which may be plain or may be formed with a circumferential groove.
Each projection may support a roller or a grooved wheel. Where the projections are formed by the opposite ends of a common pin passing through both lugs the rollers or grooved wheels are mounted on the ends of the pin projecting from opposite sides of the two lugs. Means such as circlips may be provided on the projections to prevent the rollers or grooved wheels from coming off the ends of the projections before the locking member is fitted.
Where the fastening member is provided with projections having plain cylindrical surfaces or supports rollers the U-shaped locking member may be flat i.e. the legs at least being of rectangular cross section. Where the projections are grooved or support grooved wheels the locking member may be formed as a bar of circular cross section bent to U-shape, the legs being engageable with the grooves in the projections or the wheels. Where the locking member is provided with legs of rectangular cross section the legs may be tapered to facilitate engagement of the locking member with the projections. Where the locking member is formed from a bar of circular cross section the ends of the legs may be coned to facilitate engagement of the locking member with the grooves presented by the projections.
A bridging piece may be attachable to the ends of the legs of the locking member to bridge the gap between the ends of the legs projecting beyond the lugs whereby to prevent accidental withdrawal of the locking member.
The fastening device may include tapered wedges arranged to be driven between the projections and the locking member after the locking member is in place straddling the lugs whereby to wedge the locking member in place.
Practical embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figs. 1 to 5 illustrate a construction in which the projections are formed by a common pin presenting a plain cylindrical surface and Fig. 6 illustrates a construction in which the projections support grooved wheels.
In the drawings and referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, 1 and 2 denote two articles to be joined, said articles being frame members of the wall panels of a sectional building (not shown).
The frame members 1, 2 are provided on adjacent faces with lugs 1 A, 2A respectively formed with pin holes which are aligned with one another. The lugs 1 A, 2A and consequently the frame members 1, 2 are held against lateral movement apart by a locking member 3. The locking member 3 is U-shaped and comprises a pair of legs 3A connected by a cross member 3B.
The front and rear faces of the locking member are flat and parallel to each other. The opposed inner faces of the legs 3A have relatively short flat portions 3C extending perpendicular to the cross member 3B, and the remainder of said faces mutually diverge, as shown in Fig. 4. A chamfer 3D is provided between each portion 3C and the rear face of each leg 3A to facilitate fitment of the locking member endwise on to the lugs 1 A, 2A.
The rear face of the locking member abuts the adjacent faces of the frame members 1 A, 2A, the portions 3C of the legs 3A abut the outer side faces of the Jugs 1 A, 2A, and the cross member 3B of the locking member abuts the upper edge faces of the lugs.
A pin 4 passes through the holes in the Jugs 1 A, 2A, and has end portions 4A constituting projections extending beyond the lugs, and two wedges 5 are wedged between the front face of the locking member 3 and the respective projections 4A. The frame members 1, 2 are thus firmly secured together against relative displacement in all directions.
The fastening device can be quickly and easily assembled by unskilled labour, and can be dismantled, when necessary, by first hammering out the wedges 5, and then withdrawing the pin 4, and the locking member 3.
The locking member 3 is preferably provided at each side, as shown, with a flange 6 projecting towards the pin 4. Each flange 6 prevents accidental or unintentional displacement of the adjacent wedge 5 beyond the ends of the pin 4, and also provides a guide during insertion of the wedge. The pin 4 is provided with a tapered nose 4B to facilitate insertion of the pin into the holes in the lugs 1A,2A.
Referring now to Fig. 6, the projections 4A support grooved wheels 7 rotatable on the projections 4A and the locking member formed of a circular section bar bent to U-shape is wedged into the gap between the frame members 1 A and 2A, and the respective grooved wheels 7, the legs of the locking member engaging the grooves in the wheels 7. The other parts of the fastening device of Fig. 6 bear the same reference numerals as the construction of Figs. 1 to 5.
