Abstract

Apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn (18) comprises at least two grooved spindles (10) which are mounted for rotation about parallel axes and which each have a free end, a yarn feeder (8, 9) which is mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the said axes and which during rotation places yarn into the grooves (15) of the spindles in such a manner that the yarn is placed around all the spindles, and a drive for the yarn feeder and the spindles for driving the spindles and the yarn feeder without mutual slip at the same rotary speed or with a whole- number speed ratio. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn This invention relates to apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn or the like in a compact form.
For some treatments of yarns it is necessary that they are not present in rope form, but in a loosened form. For example, filamentary material wound in the form of a rope is not shrunk uniformly during a shrinking process by means of steam. However, it may also become necessary in other cases to deposit yarns, threads or the like in a loosened form.
For the purpose of laying a yarn in a spatially condensed form, apparatus has already been prop osed in which the yarn is introduced helically into a tube and is drawn out of this tube through an obliquely cut off withdrawal opening, the yarn being placed thereby in adjacently disposed windings on a support movable relative to the tube. This apparatus admittedly operates satisfactorily, but the form in which the yarn is deposited has relatively little definition, in particular since apart from the tube walls no guidance of any kind is provided in the interior of the tube for the various superimposed windings.
It is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn in a compact form by means of which an accurately defined deposition oftheyarn on a delivery surface is possible.
The present invention provides apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn, comprising at least two grooved spindles which are rotatably mounted about parallel axes and which have a free end, a yarn feeder which is rotatably mounted parallel to the said axes and which during rotation places yarn into the grooves ofthe spindles in such a manner that the yarn is placed around all the spindles, and a drive for the yarn feeder and the spindles for driving the spindles and the yarn feeder without mutual slip at the same rotary speed or with a whole-number step-up ratio.
Thus the yarn feeder places the thread around all the spindles during each rotation. When the yarn feeder has performed a rotation, the spindle has also rotated once, so that the thread previously inserted at this location has been conveyed by one groove in the direction of the free spindle end. The yarn feeder can then insert the thread into the groove located thereabove. In this way the thread is conveyed along the spindle towards the free end thereof and released by the spindle at this end. In this case the release is effected successively at the various spindles, so that the form of the thread assumed by the latter because of its guidance around all the spindle is substantially maintained during the deposition.
Elements for guiding the yarn along a certain path may be arranged between the spindles.
In a preferred constructional embodiment of the invention, the spindles are mounted in a bearing plate which is rotatably retained on a support shaft.
The yarn feeder may be attached to the support shaft which has an internal bore communicating with a radial outlet bore for the yarn. Furthermore the support shaft may support a gear wheel which meshes with gear wheels which are associated with the respective individual spindles.
It is preferable when a plurality of spindles are arranged along a circle and the yarn feeder is rotatable about an axis which extends through the centre of this circle.
For the purpose of securing against rotation the constructional component (usually the above mentioned bearing plate) supporting the spindles, at least one of the spindles may be suitably engaged at the periphery thereof by a holder member partially surrounding the spindle. In this case it is particularly advantageous when the shoulders between adjacent grooves of the spindle partially surrounded by the holder member have a larger radius in the region of the holder member than in the remaining spindle region.
The apparatus of the invention may be suitably arranged above a displaceable delivery surface.
The invention will be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional side view of an apparatus according to the invention for the continuous deposition of yarn; Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
As shown in the drawings, a support shaft 2 rotatably mounted in a stationary bearing 3 supports at its free end a bearing plate 1 rotatable about its longitudinal axis. The support shaft 2 is nonrotatably connected to two spur gear wheels, namely at the one end a drive wheel 4 and in the vicinity of the bearing plate a spur wheel 5. The support shaft 2 has a concentric internal blind bore 6 which at its end merges into a radial bore 7 to which is connected a tubular winding arm 8 which projects radially from the support shaft 2 and is rigidly connected thereto.
The arm 8 is curved in such a manner that its free end 9 terminates below the bearing plate 1.
Concentric with the support shaft 2, five grooved spindles 10 are rotatably mounted on the bearing plate 1 at equal angular spacings, their axes of rotation extending parallel to the axis of rotation of the support shaft 2. The spindles 10 are located on the opposite side of the bearing plate 1 from the support shaft 2. Extensions 11 of the spindles extending through the bearing plate 1 are nonrotatably connected to gear wheels 12 which mesh with the spur wheel 5. The spur wheel 5 and the gear wheels 12 have the same number of teeth.
Pins 13 are inserted in the bearing plate 1 between the spindles 10 and ensure guidance of the yarn in the manner further described below.
On one of the spindles 10 the shoulders 14 between adjacent grboves 15 have a larger radius than the shoulders 16 in the remaining spindle region. These enlarged shoulders 14 are engaged by a stationary holder 17 which has a configuration' adjusted to the spindle periphery at its end facing the spindle. This holder 17 prevents rotary movement of the bearing plate 1 about the axis of rotation of the support shaft 2.
The manner of operation of the apparatus de scribed above is as follows. The support shaft 2 is rotated by means of a drive (not illustrated in the drawing) by way of the drive wheel 4, whereby the spindles 10 rotate at the same rotary speed because of the connection between the gear wheels 5 and 12.
Atthe same time the bearing plate 1 is secured against rotation by the holder 17 which engages the projecting shoulders 14 of the respective spindle 10.
A thread 18 of yarn is guided through the blind bore 6, the bore 7 and the tubular winding arm 8 and is inserted in appropriate grooves 15 of the spindles 10 during rotation of the tubular winding arm 8.
Owing to the rotation of the tubular winding arm 8 the thread is placed around all the spindles, whereby the thread assumes an approximately circular course which is approximated even more closely to a circle bythe pins 13 (Figure 3).
When, during its rotary movement, the tubular winding arm 8 reaches a spindle 10 into which it has inserted a thread during its previous rotation, this spindle also has performed a complete rotation in consequence of the synchronisation of movement between the yarn feeder and the spindles 10. The thread has thereby been conveyed through a distance of one pitch in the direction towards the free end of the spindle, so that the groove at the thread insertion level is free again for receiving the thread.
This process is repeated on all spindles. In this way the thread extends over the entire height of the spindles in the form of substantially concentric circles; the spacing between adjacent thread positions corresponds to the pitch height of the spindles.
Eventually the thread is released at the free ends of the spindles owing to the rotation of the spindles, the releases at the individual spindles occurring successively. In this case the thread is deposited in the form which it has due to surrounding all of the spindles, that is in circularform in the present case.
If the thread is deposited upon a surface which is moved relative to the depositing apparatus, the successive approximately circular loops can be deposited slightly offset one adjacent the other, so that a relatively loose completely orderly delivery results.
The yarn feeder, in the present case the tubular winding arm, always inserts the thread into a spindle after the latter has performed a complete revolution since the last insertion, so that the receiving groove at the insertion level is free again.
The arrangement described above is only one possible embodiment of apparatus according to the invention. For example, the number and the arrangement of the spindles may be different, as long as at least two spindles are used. Also, the invention is not limited to a circular arrangement of the spindles; any desired different arrangement is also possible, provided synchronisation of the movement of the yarn feeder and the spindles is ensured such that the yarn feeder inserts the thread into a spindle when the latter has performed one complete revolution or a plurality of complete revolutions since the last thread insertion. The rotary movement may even be transmitted to the spindles and the yarn feeder in va different way, for example by means of an indexing chain. It is only necessary that synchronisation of the two movements is attainable.
Whereas the direction of rotation of the spindles is determined by the requirement that the thread is moved towards their free ends, the direction of rotation of the yarn feeder may be selected as desired.
Owing to the use of spindles for advancing the yarn loops, yarns of widely different quality may be deposited, in particular even yarns with a large diameter and yarns which have a tendency to cling together. In contrast to the previously known apparatus described heretofore, adjacent positions of the yarn loops do not touch each other in the apparatus according to the invention, owing to the guidance in the grooves of the spindles.

Claims (14)

1. Apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn, comprising at least two grooved spindles which are rotatably mounted about parallel axes and which each have a free end, a yarn feeder which is rotatably mounted parallel to the said axes and which during rotation places yarn into the grooves of the spindles in such a manner that the yarn is placed around all the spindles, and a drive for the yarn feeder and the spindles for driving the spindles and the yarn feeder without mutual slip at the same rotary speed or with a whole-number step-u p ratio.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein elements for guiding the yarn along a certain path are arranged between the spindles.
3. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the yarn feeder is arranged to travel in the region of the spindles which is located remote from the free spindle ends.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the spindles are mounted in a bearing plate which is rotatably retained on a support shaft.
5. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 4, wherein elements for guiding the yarn along a certain path are arranged between the spindles and are attached to the bearing plate.
6. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 4 or 5, wherein the yarn feeder is attached to the support shaft which has an internal bore communicating with a radial outlet bore for the yarn.
7. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 4 to 6, wherein the support shaft carries a gear wheel which meshes with gear wheels which are associated with the respective individual spindles.
8. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 4 to 7, wherein the bearing plate is secured against rotation.
9. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 8, wherein, for the purpose of securing the bearing plate against rotation, at least one spindle is engaged at the periphery thereof by a holder member which partially surrounds the said spindle.
10. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 9, wherein, in the region of the holder member, the shoulders between the adjacent grooves of the spindle partially surrounded by the holder member have a larger radius in the region of the holder member than in the remaining spindle region.
11. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 10, wherein the yarn feeder is a tubular winding arm.
12. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 11, wherein a plurality of spindles are arranged in a circle and wherein the yarn feeder is rotatable about an axis which extends through the centre of the said circle.
13. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 12, arranged above a displaceable delivery surface.
14. Apparatus for the continuous deposition of yarn, substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
