Abstract

A ferry vessel has a bow or stern ramp 4 comprising a movable deck section 5 which is pivoted on the deck adjacent the bow or stern and has a skirt 11 depending downwardly, and a stowable section 6 pivoted on the outboard end of the movable deck section 5. The ramp is movable between a lowered position, in which substantially the whole skirt 11 overlaps the hull portion below the deck section 5 and an upper stowed position, in which the movable deck section 5 is pivoted upwardly about its axis so that the overlap between the skirt 11 and hull is reduced and the stowable section 6 extends upwardly. The provision of the skirt enables a higher freeboard and a better bow or stern profile to be achieved, thus making the vessel more seaworthy, improving its steering characteristics and reducing its fuel consumption. <IMAGE>
