Abstract

A supported olefin polymerization catalyst which is active in the presence of an alkyl aluminium cocatalyst, is produced by reacting together an alkyl aluminum halide, a dialkyl magnesium compound, and a reducible titanium compound of the formula Ti(OR)nX4-n, where R is an alkyl group, X is a halogen atom, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4, in the presence of a particulate organic polymer to form a reaction product supported on the polymer particles, the amounts of the reactants being such that the amount of reaction product obtained is less than 30% of the total weight of the reaction product and the polymer particles, and drying the supported reaction product by heating at an elevated temperature which is below the softening temperature of the organic polymer. This catalyst is useful in conventional polymerization or copolymerization of 1-olefins.
