Abstract

The width and/or the thickness of a workpiece is measured by using T.V. cameras, which have photo diode arrays, to view a plane of the workpiece 3 at two positions 1, 2 displaced vertically above a datum. The resulting signals indicative of the angle subtended by the workpiece at the image positions are representative of the image widths Wa1 Wa2 apparent at these positions. These signals are fed to a microprocessor (Fig. 2) where the two "apparent" width signals are combined, to provide product and difference components that are used to calculate the true workpiece width and/or the workpiece thickness by using disclosed formulae. <IMAGE>
