Abstract

The method comprises placing e.g. submerging one or more moulds particularly shell moulds, in a bed of particulate material, applying a suction effect to the bed and maintaining the suction effect at least until pouring of molten metal into the mould or moulds has been completed. Problems of flame, fume and gas emission, and - in the case of shell moulds - supporting, breakouts, etc., are thus overcome. Air current caused by the suction effects mould cooling. The bed can be preheated prior to pouring. The bed can be fluidised to aid mould placement.
