Abstract

The winding drum 6 of an elevator 7, 8 is normally driven by an AC motor 1 which is supplied from AC supply 3 through a control unit 2 and is coupled to drum 6 and an electromagnetic brake drum 5 through a coupling 4. If supply 3 is interrupted the brake 15 is applied to stop cage 8 and simultaneously relay 13 responds to the interruption to connect an emergency DC supply 14 to unit 2, whereupon the brake is released and a DC motor 12 is energised to engage a pinion 11 with an emergency drive gear 10, so that drum 6 is then driven by motor 12 to move cage 8 to the nearest floor. To save space members 1, 5, 6, 10, 12 are arranged as shown in Figure 2, the gear 10 being fixedly mounted on drum 5 and pinion 11, Figure 3 (not shown) being brought into meshing engagement therewith through rotation of motor 12. Coupling 4 has one part movable with a worm shaft (16) which carries drum 5 and has a gear 17 engageable with wheel 18 on drum 6. Brake coil 21 controls arm 22 to actuate shoes 23. Gear 10 may be mounted on shaft (16) or at the side of drum 6, instead of on drum 5. <IMAGE>
