Abstract
An arrangement for the detection of surface faults in the form of streaks on continuously moving webs comprising a source of light (206) for illuminating the web and a light receiving device (at 211) arranged at the angle of reflection. The source of light provides a substantially rectangular area of illumination on the tape having two sides parallel with the direction of movement (203) of the tape. The width of the rectangle is about twice the greatest expected width of the streaks. The streaks are detected by observing or recording the change in intensity of illumination in a plane of observation passing through the radiation field parallel to the web, using a ground glass screen, a magnifying lens, an image tube and photographic film or a slit and photodetector to scan the observation plane. <IMAGE>
