Abstract

A furnace for the melting down and reclamation of scrap metal, particularly for the separation and recovery of two or more metals from scrap by differential melting, comprises a furnace chamber (3) provided with heating means (12) and a preferably inclined tube (7) of bonded graphite other highly refractory material arranged in the furnace chamber in such a manner that its interior is sealed off from the interior of the chamber, the upper end (8) of the tube (7) being open to receive a charge of scrap metal, and the lower end being provided with a conduit (11) through which molten metal can flow from the tube out of the furnace. The tube (7) may be provided with a grid (16) of refractory material to serve as a hearth for the scrap being treated. The temperature of the tube (7) is preferably maintained at the value required to melt one only of the metals in the scrap by controlling a burner (12) in accordance with the tube temperature measured by a thermocouple (15). <IMAGE>
