Abstract

A continuous furnace for heat treating metal strip has a floatation hearth 7 which extends lengthwise through the furnace and includes support surfaces for strip travelling through the furnace. The furnace comprises a plenum chamber 8 positioned below the hearth and separated from the hearth by a distributor plate 11 formed with a multiplicity of passageways 12 through which gas under pressure can flow from the trough to form a gas cushion to support strips travelling through the furnace above the support surfaces of the floatation hearth. Lateral inclination of some or all of the passageways assists to provide aerodynamic stability simultaneously with a generally flat strip profile. <IMAGE>
