Abstract

A compressor of the sliding- vane eccentric-rotor type has a lubrication system (33) leading from a sump in the compressor casing (16) and operated by differential pressure between the sump and the parts to be lubricated. A disposable full-flow filter element (25), typically of 5 to 20 micron rating, is positioned in the lubrication system (33) to remove at least the majority of smaller gas-ingested particles thereby protecting an oil separator element (172) from becoming clogged with these particles. By protecting the oil separator element (172) in this manner it is practicable to use a sub-micronic filter for the oil separator (172) so that droplets of oil can be separated from the compressed gas with greater efficiency. The lubrication system (33) may also incorporate an oil cooler (27) and a by-pass valve (204) which ensures effective lubrication if the filter element (25) becomes blocked. <IMAGE>
