Abstract

A gear selector mechanism for gearboxes has a selector fork 2 carried by a shaft 1 that is locked in each of its end positions. The actuating member 5 has a certain amount of lost motion in relation to the shaft 1 at each end of its travel and this lost motion is used to lock and unlock rings of balls 9 by means of stepped sleeves 7 which move the balls radially to engage an annular recess 10 in the fixed housing. The motion is transmitted to the sleeves by a collar 6 on the member 5 and the sleeves are urged against the collar by springs 8. <IMAGE>
