Abstract

A method and system for draining soil comprises the use of at least one hollow water-permeable member 1 having fine capillary pores connected in a drain 2 and embedded in the ground. Means is connected thereto to provide a negative pressure between the inside and the outside of the member 1 whereby water is sucked from the ground through the pores into the member 1 for discharge through the drain 2. The negative pressure is provided by filling the member 1 and drain 2 with a charge of water through a pipe 4 and then by providing a discharge opening for the drain 2 at a level below the drain 2 while the pipe 4 is closed. Alternatively a suction pump may be used. <IMAGE>
