Abstract

Substantive synthetic resins are applied to textile fibrous materials, e.g. wool sliver, yarn or fabric, by continuously passing the material and an aqueous solution or dispersion of the resin through a tubular reactor and adjusting the relative speeds of the material and the liquid so that the material has taken up the desired amount of resin when it leaves the reactor and the discharged liquid is substantially depleted of resin. Improved results can be obtained by preliminary oxidative treatment, e.g. with chlorine water, which can also be carried out in a similar tubular reactor. Preferred pH values are 2-2.5 for the chlorination and 7.5-8.0 for the application of a polyamide/ epichlorohydrin resin to wool. The process is particularly suitable for shrink-resist treatment of wool.
