Abstract

A cellulosic ion-exchange fibre which may be used in the form of filter paper and which can selectively retain heavy metal ions has the following group chemically bonded thereto <IMAGE> wherein n and m, which may be the same or different, but are preferably the same, are 1 or 2. Alternatively, salts of this group may be used. The ion- exchange fibre may be produced by contacting a cellulosic fibre with an aqueous solution containing a compound of formula <IMAGE> in which X is a leaving group such as a halogen, in the presence of an alkali and then subjecting the result to a heat treatment.
