Abstract

A web having a cellular construction which is resiliently compressible is gravure printed using a gravure printing roller and a backing roller spaced therefrom by a distance of less than the uncompressed web thickness. The pressure applied to the web between the printing and backing rollers is less than 7 kg per cm width of the web at the nip between the printing and backing rollers; this relatively low pressure enables registration to be corrected in multi-station machines under reduced tension.
