Abstract

A rail vehicle or short train 1, 2, 3 having an elongated space for a freight container C and a pair of spaced co-acting container transfer mechanisms 4 is provided, each transfer mechanism 4 comprising a cranked or angular first frame 5 supported on the vehicle or train, a second frame 9 supported on the first frame 5, and a lifting arm 15 pivotally supported at 14 on the second frame 9, the first and second frames 5, 9 being turnable, in opposite directions, about radially spaced vertical axes so that, in use, the free end 18 of the lifting arm 15 is constrained to follow a substantially linear path in a horizontal plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle or train. Counterweights 30 in frames 31 may be traversed in or out as the transfer mechanisms are operated to transfer the container C to or from, for example, a road vehicle or a containerized train. <IMAGE>
