Abstract
201,574. Warren, L. F. July 29, 1922, [Convention date]. Meteorological conditions, local, apparatus for influencing.-Artificial rainfall or the coalescence and precipitation or dispersion of fogs and other atmospheric moisture is brought about by the artificial electrification of the atmosphere by scattering from a dirigible aircraft finely-divided particles of opposite electrical charge on the upper side of the cloud &c. An apparatus for carrying on an aeroplane &c. is shown in Fig. 1 in which an alternator 1 supplies a high-tension transformer 4, the secondary winding 5 of which is connected as shown through thermionic rectifiers 7 to a condenser 12, and thence through a reversing-switch 13 to a charging nozzle 14, shown in detail in Fig. 2. Fine dust from a hopper 16, Fig. 1, passes through the .annular space between an insulating tube 22, Fig. 2, and an inner conductor 20 connected to one side of the condenser 12, the other side of which is connected to an outer conductor 25. Instead of dust, positive or negative ions may be discharged to form nuclei for the condensation of moisture. This may be effected by trailing from the aeroplane a number of insulated wires connected to one terminal of the high-tension unidirectional device shown in Fig. 1, the other terminal being connected to the frame of the aeroplane, the charge on which is dispersed by needles on the upper wing of the machine or otherwise. The potential should be sufficient to cause a brush discharge from the trailing wires.
