Abstract
A device for converting rotary movement into linear movement, which device comprises a first member 4 which is adapted to be rotated, a second member 26 which is adapted to be moved linearly in a direction depending upon the direction of rotation of the first member 4, a spring 38, and a displacement arrangement 42, 44 for the spring 38, the device being such that individual turns of the spring 38 abut each other or the displacement arrangement 42, 44 whereby the spring 38 is substantially longitudinally incompressible so that it can support a load, and the device also being such that individual turns of the spring 38 are displaceable past the displacement arrangement 42, 44 on rotation of the first member 4 to give a fine displacement of the second member 26 which is equal to the number of turns of the spring 38 that are displaced and which enables the first member 4 to be coarsely rotated directly from a prime mover 6 without the need for reduction gearing. <IMAGE>
