Abstract

In a method of forming oriented fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite articles, the fiber is impregnated with the thermoplastic resin and conditioned into a molding compound. The molding compound is compacted into a simply configured bulk thermoplastic preform containing randomly distributed fibers. The preform is subjected to pressure in a heated forming device causing the material to flow such that the fibers are essentially disposed in a preferential orientation. The forged shape may be cooled under pressure in the mold to form the final composite article. The preferred materials are polyphenylene sulphide resin and graphite fibres.
