Abstract

A noise-reduced video output signal 22 has contributions both from the incoming video 10 and from stored video 11 representing the video which arrived one frame or field earlier. The relative contributions of the incoming and stored video vary 54 according to the difference 46 between them, i.e. the motion in the picture, provided that the difference exceeds a preset threshold 50 selected to exclude differences due to noise. To prevent chrominance phase noise which exceeds the threshold from being interpreted as motion the chrominance component is removed either from the incoming and stored signals by filtering, 24, 26, 28 and 32, 34, 36, or from the difference signal. If the difference of the incoming and stored video exceeds a higher preset threshold 72, indicating a large degree of motion, the output video 22 consists of the incoming video alone. <IMAGE>
