Abstract

The invention relates to a regenerative heating system for an inclined hearth gas-retort furnace having a battery of side by side chambers (10). The furnace has a horizontal roof (11) and rows of vertical heating flues (30, 31) arranged between adjacent chambers (10) the flues being, joined in pairs or groups of flues being joined together by a header flue (40) located at their top. Regenerator cells (23- 26) enclose a checkerwork 29 and are essentially vertically placed below each chamber and each communicates only with one or more of the flues of one pair or a group through a pipe opening at the hearth of the heating flue and/or at spaced points (43) over the height of the flue. Fuel gas supply channels (44) open into the flues, with control means (46, 28) for the supply of gas and of air to the flues, these control means being independent for each pair or group of flues. The regenerator cells (23-26), of cross-section variable according to the flue with which they are associated are provided with checkerwork (29) to a height substantially the same whatever the cell. The invention finds application in furnaces such as coke-ovens. <IMAGE>
