Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of contactlessly carrying a web (1) in the form of waves in longitudinal section. The web (1) is low in rigidity and is continuously run and fluid pressure is applied to both surfaces of the web (1) in such a manner that portions (2) of the web (1) subjected to the fluid pressure are staggered with respect to the running direction of the web (1) to thereby contactlessly support the web (1). The method according to the present invention is characterized that the pitch (p) of the adjacent fluid pressure applied portions (2) on one side of the web (1) and the width (W) of each fluid pressure applied portions (2) to the web (1) in the running direction of the web (1) are maintained to satisfy the relationship of W >/= p/6, and the amplitude (2f) of the waveform of the web (1) and the thickness (h) of the web (1) are maintained to satisfy the relationship of f >/= 30 h. Preferably, the above two relationships are W >/= p/4 and f >/= 60 h, respectively. <IMAGE>
