Abstract

A focus control system in a photographic camera, for example, includes a rangefinder (14) (preferably acoustic) and driving means (38) responsive to a signal from the rangefinder for moving a movable element of a variable focus lens to a focused position. In addition to being movable throughout a first region in which it focuses at an image plane images of objects within a given range, the lens is also movable in a second region which is outside its focusing region. Prior to an automatic focusing operation, the lens is always returned to this second region, so that automatic focusing movement is unidirectional and always starts from the same reference point. The return movement of the lens to the reference point may be a part of an automobile focusing and exposure cycle, in a camera. Where provision is made for manually focusing the lens, as an alternative to automatic focusing, means may be provided for automatically returning the lens to its reference point after a manual exposure cycle in the camera. <IMAGE>
