Abstract

Laundry from a washing drum 9 is delivered into a spin drying drum 16 rotatable about an axis 14 inclined downwardly only slightly relative to axis 11, and after spinning to extract water by centrifugal force the laundry in the drum 16 is loosened by pressurising the space 18 on the exterior of drum 16 while forming a partial vacuum within the drum. The space within drum 16 is connected with a suction pipeline 27 connectable with a delivery chamber 29 connected with the intake of a blower 24 the outlet of which is connected with a pressure pipeline 22 connectable with the space 18 around drum. By operation of various valves controlling air flow to and from the blower 24, drying of laundry during spinning of drum 16 is assisted by warm air flow radially outward through the laundry, then after spinning, the laundry in the drum is first loosened by air flow in the reverse direction, then is sucked along pipeline 27 into delivery chamber 29 or into a dryer 38. <IMAGE>
