Abstract

A fermented liquid feed composition for pigs is prepared by fermenting a feed substrate comprising plant material with a homofermenting, Lactobacillus bacteria. The bacteria being characterised by: a) being viable under a plurality of conditions of pH corresponding to a plurality of location in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs; b) being capable of co-aggregating with and antagonistic against strains of Salmonella, E. Coli and/or Clostridia; c) being able to produce lactic acid in an amount of at least 250mMol/l in 24 hours upon fermentation at 30ºC in the feed substrate using an inoculants having a viable bacteria concentration of 106 CFU/ml. Preferred bacteria for use in the composition are Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus salivarius.
