A bulk carrier for oil and or other bulk cargoes eg. ore has no main longitudinal bulkheads or double side walls and high lateral tanks, but instead has a space above and of smaller width than the main cargo space 9 and which is defined by decking 17 and side walls 16. Segregated ballast may be accommodated in one or more of the various cargo spaces which are defined by transverse bulkheads. <IMAGE>
