Abstract

The invention provides a method of operating a hybrid powertrain 101 of a motor vehicle (100 see fig 1). The hybrid powertrain 101 comprises a motor-generator electric unit 500 and an internal combustion engine 110 such as a diesel engine. The operating method comprises the steps of performing fuel injections, monitoring a position of an accelerator pedal (446 see fig 3), and cutting the fuel injections off if the accelerator pedal (446) is completely released. The method further comprises operating the motor-generator electric unit 500 to generate torque, if the fuel injections are cut off, and monitored engine speed decreases below a threshold value. A preferable condition to the torque generation is that a clutch is engaged, as engine stall can thus be prevented. Sufficient electric power and battery 505 charge are also preferable conditions. The invention is aimed at reducing fuel consumption relative to hybrids having a known idle control strategy.
