Abstract

The invention provides a method for reducing the amount of deposits and lacquers on an in-cylinder sensor of an internal combustion engine, the sensor including a bellow 4, a bellow cap 3 and a sensor rod 2, the method including the steps of (a) evaluating the volume of the crevice 7 between the bellow 4 and the bellow cap 3, (b) evaluating the volume of the sensor rod 2, and (c) machining a seat 5 for the sensor rod on the engine so as to form a clearance between the sensor rod and its seat having a volume which is at least 2.5 times, preferably 3 times, greater than the volume of the crevice between the bellow and the bellow cap so as to form a decoupling volume between the cylinder and the bellow area which limits the diffusion of unburned hydrocarbons between the bellow and its bellow cap. The sensor may be a pressure sensing glow plug (PSG).
