Abstract

A squirrel-cage motor is provided with a brake which operates when the current is switched off, to brake the rotor. The stator 11 has a braking surface 29. The rotor 13 has a brake shoe 31 which is urged by a spring 44 against the braking surface when the current is switched off, and is drawn magnetically towards the rotor when the current is on. The shoe 31 rotates with the rotor 13 due to engagement of a lug 33 in a recess 34 in the rotor. The shoe is made up of two plates 36, 37 each in the form of a continuous circular channel, and which are fixed together, back-to-back, to provide two axially-spaced hubs 39, 40 journalling the shoe on the rotor shaft 30. <IMAGE>
