Abstract

After bales have been arranged into flat sets by means of a bale sledge, a bale loader applies a pincer- like grip to each bale of a said flat set by the rotation of parallel tine bars in opposite senses to cause tines mounted on the bars to pierce the bales. The set of bales may then be picked up for transport or stacking. The bale handling machine specifically described, which gives a positive grip to a flat eight even when some bales may be somewhat out of line, to a single row of bales, or even to a single bale, has a framework (7) in which are journalled a plurality of parallel tine bars (11), each mounting a plurality of similarly disposed tines (12). Means (17) are provided which are operable to rotate the tine bars together so that adjacent tine bars rotate in opposite senses. The tines on adjacent bars are oppositely disposed with the result that, upon operation, tines on adjacent bars are caused to move towards each other in a generally pincer-like manner. <IMAGE>
