Abstract
A housing 14, 16 for a rotating electrical machine, which machine comprises a motor/generator unit for use in a vehicle drive train, has a cooling passage 26 for cooling the machine. A removable manifold 50 is provided, the removable manifold comprising an inlet and outlet for the cooling passage. The housing is arranged such that the removable manifold 50 can be located at a plurality of different positions corresponding to pads 62. A drain hole may be formed diametrically opposite the manifold in boss 68 . A stator winding terminal box 32 and low voltage terminal 70 to connect external components such as a thermocouple or other sensor are provided. A hollow rotor hub 74 is disclosed, through which the drive shaft18between the engine and gearbox freely passes, the shaft being secured to the hub by bolts 19. This arrangement allows the design of the machine to be adjusted to fit different applications and torque to be transmitted from the associated engine to the associated gearbox such that the rotor needs only cope with the loading to/from the electric machine thus reducing the need for high grade materials to be used for the rotor.
