Abstract
A method of processing municipal solid waste (MSW) comprising the steps of (i) optionally fractionating the waste to 55mm or below, (ii) composting the MSW for a period of 1 or more weeks to produce an MSW compost, (iii) laying out the MSW compost prior to sewing with crops, (iv) cultivating a energy crop on the MSW compost, (v) harvesting the high energy crop and combining the harvested crop with the MSW compost to produce a crop/compost mix, and (vi) optionally combusting the crop/compost mix. Ideally the waste is fractionation is performed using a trommel screen system using a screen sized between 35mm and 70mm. The waste may be separated so that the fraction taken for composting contains 90%w/w biodegradable waste. The energy crop is selected from one or more or a brassica and a cereal, or mixtures of both. The crop may be wheat, triticale, oilseed rape and/or turnip rape. After harvest, the energy crop is preferably dried and shredded.
