Abstract
n-paraffins having more than 20 carbon atoms are separated from oil by removing the aromatic fraction (e.g. by liquid chromatography on alumina and silica) to leave a saturated fraction which is then contacted with a 5 ANGSTROM molecular sieve at an elevated temperature under ultrasonic vibrations in the presence of a solvent, to adsorb n-paraffins. The n-paraffins can be desorbed in the presence of a solvent and under ultrasonic vibrations and analysed by liquid chromatography to enable the n-paraffin distribution in the oil to be determined.
