Abstract

Apparatus for steaming food at substantially atmospheric conditions comprises a steam chamber 65; a valve controlling the supply of water into the bottom of the steam chamber, and heating means 81 outside the steam chamber 65 for heating the water in the steam chamber 65 to produce steam. In order to maintain substantially atmospheric conditions in the steam chamber 65, a vent 111 leads therefrom to a condensing chamber 121 for condensing the escaping steam. In the condensing chamber 121 water is sprayed on the steam in order to condense it. The heating means and the filling means, are controlled by means including a sensor 161 for sensing the temperature of the water and condensed steam in the condensing chamber 121. <IMAGE>
