Abstract
For ultrasonic examination of a body, such as the body of a patient, it is usual to place a transducer in contact with the body. A stand-off cell may be placed between the body and the transducer, for example to allow imaging of the skin line. The invention provides a solid stand-off cell which has input and output faces (3 and 4) inclined at an angle theta . The angle theta is chosen so that components of energy which are reflected at the stand-off cell output face (4) interfere destructively to reduce the intensity of such reflected energy at the transducer (1). <IMAGE>
