Abstract

A drive shaft assembly 10 has a tubular, fibre reinforced plastic shaft portion 11 within each end of which a cylindrically annular metallic sleeve 25 is received. Anchoring means in the form of an annular rib 29 and/or ridges (30) and furrows (31) on the radially outwardly directed surface 26 of each sleeve 25 are bonded to a radially inwardly directed surface 32 of the shaft portion 11 primarily by adhesion between the matrix of the fibre reinforced plastic material 12 and the anchoring means, and, if additional bonding is required, by a mechanical interlocking. A yoke 13 of a universal joint (14) is secured to each sleeve 25. The preferred method for making the drive shaft assembly is to position the two sleeves 25 on a mandrel (45) and apply resin impregnated reinforcing material over the mandrel and a sufficient portion of each sleeve 25 to embrace the anchoring means thereon. The resin is then cured and, if the mandrel is reusable, it is removed before the yoke 13 is affixed to each sleeve 25. The resulting assembly 10 may then be dynamically balanced with suitable weights (42) being secured to the sleeve 25 in the required disposition. <IMAGE>
