Abstract
A coin changing apparatus arranged to provide change for an inserted coin. The apparatus has sensors 9-13 to detect the insertion of coins and a path leading to a coin validity tester 16. From the tester 16 coins, if adjudged invalid are returned to the customer, but if adjudged valid are past to a holding arrangement 23. The arrangement 23 holds the inserted coin until the electronic control circuits (81, 87, 88) determine whether or not coins fed to an Escrow unit 62 from hoppers 45-48 meet the required change payout. If the electronic control circuits decide insufficient or too much change has been fed to the Escrow unit 62 then the holding arrangement 23 returns the customer's originally inserted coin and change held by the Escrow unit is discharged into a miscounts box 66. On the other hand if the Escrow unit is deemed to hold the correct change the originally inserted coin is fed to a coin box 39, 42 and the required change is transferred to the customer at a coin cup (8). In the event of a fault the apparatus is arranged to shutdown in such a manner that a customer's inserted coin is returned to him. Thus the apparatus is arranged to ensure that a customer either receives the required change or has his originally inserted coin returned. <IMAGE>
