Abstract

Lead carbonate is prepared by rotating a rotary mill containing granular metallic lead, a liquid medium and a gas containing oxygen and optionally including carbon dioxide under conditions such that at least a part of the granular metallic lead wetted with the liquid medium is exposed to the gas phase above the liquid medium and the granules of metallic lead are frictionally contacted with one another in the liquid medium to thereby form a dispersion of fine particles of lead carbonate in the liquid medium or when oxygen alone is present, a dispersion of fine particles of lead monoxide. In the latter case, these particles are subsequently contacted with carbon dioxide to convert them to lead carbonate. The thus produced lead carbonate may be used as a pigment, a stabiliser for vinyl chloride resins or as a rust-preventing agent in paints.
