Abstract

Apparatus for removal from a first liquid (e.g. sea water) of suspensions of a second oleaginous liquid and of solid particles, comprises a vessel 10 having an inlet 11 for the liquid to be treated, and an outlet 18 for the treated first liquid. Between the inlet 11 and outlet 18 are a coalescer 13 and a filter 16 through which liquid must flow from the inlet 11 to the outlet 18. A flow passage between the coalescer 13 and filter 16 is provided by the whole cross-section of the vessel 10. Back washing connections 30, 31, 28 are provided, also a separate outlet 23 for coalesced second liquid. In alternative construction filter and coalescer may be reversed, the coalescer may be annular and flow may be generally upwards. The vessel could be horizontal. <IMAGE>
