Abstract

Fingerpress examining apparatus comprises a platen (32) on which a finger (F) can be placed, and means (16, 18, 20) for directing a slit shaped beam of light at a strip of the fingerpress, which light is subsequently reflected onto an elongate light receiving surface defined by an array of photodiodes (12) which are interrogated electronically. After every interrogation the light beam slit is moved to a parallel part of the fingerpress for the next interrogation, so that a complete picture of dark and light signals corresponding to the crests and troughs of the successive strips of the fingerpress can be built up for storage or processing. <IMAGE>
